The number of solar panels you need depends on two things: how much electricity you consume and how much roof space you have. You can get a long way with a simple rule of thumb.
- One panel provides an indicative 350–450 kWh per year
- Average household: approximately 8–10 panels
- Private individuals pay 0% VAT
- Think ahead: heat pump/charging station will increase your consumption
Calculate using your annual consumption
One modern solar panel in the Netherlands provides an indicative 350–450 kWh per year Divide your annual consumption (in kWh, see your energy bill) by that number and you have an initial estimate. An average household with ± 3,000 kWh consumption needs about 8 to 10 panels to be sufficient.

Take your roof into account
Besides consumption, your roof surface area and orientationcount. South is ideal, but east-west also works perfectly well and spreads the yield throughout the day. On a flat roof, we place panels on a lightweight mounting system at the optimal angle.

Think about the future
Are you planning to drive an electric vehicle or install a heat pump later? Then your consumption will rise. It may be smart to install a slightly larger system. With the end of the net-metering scheme (salderingsregeling) by 2027, a home battery becomes more interesting; we will advise you on this.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay VAT on solar panels?
Private individuals pay 0% VAT on solar panels, inverter, mounting, and installation. That saves you money directly on the invoice, with no hassle regarding refunds.
Does it also work on a flat roof?
Yes. On flat roofs, we place the panels on a lightweight mounting system at the best angle (east-west or south).
What happens to the net metering scheme?
The net-metering scheme (salderingsregeling) ends on 1 January 2027. After that, self-consumption becomes more valuable; a home battery can then provide extra returns.
