Buying a heat pump: what should you look out for?

A heat pump is a great investment, but the choices you make make all the difference. We walk you through everything, honestly and without sales talk.

You don't buy a heat pump every day. The right choices regarding type, capacity, placement, and brand will determine your comfort, savings, and noise levels for years to come. In this buying guide, we outline the most important points.

In short
  • First, choose between hybrid and all-electric
  • The right capacity prevents over- or under-dimensioning
  • Pay attention to noise and the placement of the outdoor unit
  • Buy from a certified installer with their own engineers

1. Hybrid or all-electric

The first and most important choice. A hybrid heat pump works in tandem with your central heating boiler and is the smartest first step for most existing homes. All-electric takes you completely off gas, but requires good insulation. Read about the difference →

2. The right capacity

A heat pump that is too powerful will cycle on and off frequently and wear out faster; one that is too weak won't maintain your comfort on cold days. We calculate the correct capacity based on your home, insulation, and heat distribution system (radiators or underfloor heating).

3. Noise and placement

Modern outdoor units are efficient and quiet, but placement matters: not directly under a bedroom window or too close to the neighbours. We adhere to current noise standards and work with you to choose the best location.

4. Brand and installer

We work with top brands such as Vaillant, Daikin and Remeha and the Dutch We Heat (COP up to 5.0, quiet and compact). More important than the brand is a certified installer with their own engineers who installs it neatly and according to standards.
