Heat pump and noise: how many decibels?

Noise is a frequently asked question regarding heat pumps. We explain what is normal and how we keep it quiet.

A heat pump makes noise, but modern units are much quieter than a few years ago. More important than the decibels on paper is the placement and whether we stay within the applicable standards.

What does the standard say?

For heat pumps, there is a legal noise standard at the property boundary with the neighbours. We dimension and install the unit so that we remain well within those limits; we check this in advance during the site survey.

Quiet through smart placement

We do not place the outdoor unit directly under a bedroom window or tight against the fence. With vibration dampers, the correct distance and possibly an enclosure we keep the noise low. Many units also have a quieter night mode.

Noise standards apply towards the neighbours. We ensure that the installation complies with these, and we include this in our advice.
