Do I need underfloor heating for a heat pump?

A persistent misconception. We explain when underfloor heating helps and when radiators are perfectly sufficient.

"A heat pump only works with underfloor heating" is something you often hear, but it is not entirely true. It is all about low-temperature heating, and that can be achieved in several ways.

In short
  • Underfloor heating is not required for a hybrid heat pump
  • Heat pumps work best at low temperatures
  • Low-temperature radiators are an alternative
  • For all-electric, underfloor heating helps with efficiency

It is all about low temperature

A heat pump is most economical when it only needs to heat water to a low temperature . Underfloor heating is ideal for this (large surface area, low temperature), but it is not the only option.

The lower the flow temperature, the more efficient the heat pump.

Hybrid? Then your radiators will suffice

With a hybrid heat pump, your central heating boiler kicks in on cold days, so your existing radiators are perfectly fine. For most existing homes, this is the easiest and cheapest step.

All-electric? Low-temperature heat distribution helps

If you want to go completely gas-free, low-temperature heat distribution, underfloor heating or low-temperature radiatorshelp. We assess each home to see what provides the best efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

Can a heat pump work with standard radiators?

In a hybrid setup, certainly. For all-electric, we check whether your radiators are large enough or if low-temperature radiators would be useful.

Do I need to break open my floor?

Not necessarily. There are also milling and surface-mounted systems, and often (low-temperature) radiators are sufficient. We advise on what suits your home.
